Tragedies and Trinkets

It turns out the Holocaust Museum has a gift shop.

August 31, 2001- U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan called on Israel Friday to stop using the Holocaust as a reason to continue what he said were policies of occupation, displacement, and extra-judicial killings of Palestinians.

I hope they bulldoze that monument to hipocracy.

An uncivil tone from "x", who can neither spell nor take credit for his own comments. While I wouldn't say that the holocaust is never invoked in bad faith, calling the museum hypocritical is both incorrect and nasty.

Hypocrisy. Happy? Anyway, It is true that the abused child becomes the abusing parent and Israel has in truth become the National Socialists of the Middle East.

The holocaust museum was built to educate, to raise consciousness, to teach us to "never forget". I have to believe that students all over the country are raising their hands in class and asking why Israel seems to have forgotten.

The truth is most American Jews deplore the actions of Israel. They know from experience that eventually the American public will become infuriated. This will be an unfortunate time for all Jews, most of whom will be blameless.

Your post was not meant to arouse this sort of response, I know. Let us solemnly remember a human tragedy that happened 70 years ago. However, we're not out of the woods yet.

And how do you know I'm a "he"?

x- I appreciate the more thoughtful tone of this post. I certainly don't endorse every action taken by Israel with respect to the current Intifada. But the museum is not even run by the Israeli government, and your suggestion that it be bulldozed was in any event very offensive.

I don't claim to know your gender. There are several acceptable literary rules for dealing with our cumbersome English pronouns when in doubt, and since you have not provided your name I have adopted one of them.
